SYNOPSIS

“HIGHLIGHTS OF A LIFE OF AN ANGLO-PORTUGUESE-DANE”

Emma Elisabeth (née Andersen) Gilbert born in Portugal at the height of World War II, she is brought up during Salazar’s dictatorship, experiences the Carnations Revolution of 1974 and near civil war as a journalist for Associated Pres news agency in Portugal.   The revolution luckily develops slowly and with many hiccups into a democracy.

AIM

The aim of this talk is to show the social and cultural differences between Portugal and England/Denmark in the middle of the 20th century (mainly in regard to women) and how she adapted to them throughout her life.

BACKGROUND

Of Viking, Anglo Saxon and Celtic roots Emma is a true melting pot of cultures. She is married to an Englishman and has two sons.

RESULT

If you want to mix with the local people wherever you are, be flexible and recognise the importance of the language and local unwritten norms.
